Where does this come from?
Well this is a game made by one person, me (Igor F.) during my holidays and after my day job. It took several years to complete!
The aim was to try to do a Donkey Kong game in high definition, trying to keep as much as possible the look and feel of the original Donkey Kong Country game from Super Nintendo. At the time of its release, just 20 years ago, the game was really beautiful and had incredible graphics. Rareware, the original developer, used renders (pictures) of their 3D models of their characters and backgrounds as 2D elements so that the Super Nintendo could display them.
I thought that now, with the power we have on modern computers, I could create a game with 3D models as detailed as what they used in the original game, but displaying them this time in real time 3D.
This game has been developped with the Unreal Development Kit.
This game is a tribute to the Rareware and Nintendo folks who created an incredible game 20 years ago. Congratulation guys, you made one of the best game ever!
In order to create the first world of A Tribute To Donkey Kong Country, I had to :
- Write 13,000+ lines of code,
- Create 1,000+ game assets including
- 20+ Characters with 120+ animations,
- Model 200+ 3D objects,
- Draw 400+ textures,
- Animate 30+ particles effects,
- Design 12 levels,
- Spend an unknown amount of hours on my computer… Damn!
Thanks to the community helping on Uscript and UDK, writing tutorials and giving samples of their code.
Thanks to Michael Allar for his ForecourseUI code and tutorials.
Thanks to the people answering on boards and wikis, I could solve all the issues I had without ever having to ask, there was always someone before me having the same issue and someone giving the solution. Amazing! Thank you all out there!
Thanks to the brilliant artists from OCRemix.org!
And of course, thanks to my family and friends who supported me even if it meant spending hours alone in front of the computer screen.
